Bealtaine, celebrated on May 1 or May Day, is a sacred time honoring our connection with the Earth. We relish the beauty, sensuality, and fertility of the Earth and our earthly bodies.
On April 21, I dreamed:
I am looking out over a vast, flat, open vista of land with large antlers projecting upward from it, as if they were protecting it.
That day, Ukrainian officials announced that they had located mass graves on the outskirts of the besieged, devastated city of Mariupol. They said that as many as 20,000 people had died in weeks of relentless bombardment.
These atrocities are direct assaults on human bodies and the land. The people of Ukraine are fighting back with great courage. The dream shows us that the land fights back too. Deer antlers are designed for protecting deer from predators and fighting to establish leadership of a group.
Land is alive. It has agency, spirit, soul, intelligence, love. We may think that we have to protect the land. We have a role in doing so, but the land is so much vaster than any human. It can and does protect and heal us.
I believe that, just as the people of Ukraine are fighting to defend themselves from Russia’s attempt to dominate them, the land is fighting to protect itself and the people that live on it. When we call on the spirits of the land, in whatever form they might appear to us, we ally ourselves with beings who have inhabited a place far longer than humans. Their strength is immense, their love even greater.
I pray for a time when all people on Earth can experience peace, can feel protected and safe, can expand into joy and sensuality at this sacred time, can drop their defenses, rest, and heal.
